Payday is on its way! I cannot stop it! I may welcome its coming, or I may dread it, but I cannot avoid it.
In today's first reading, this is how the prophet Daniel describes our common future: "At that time there shall arise Michael, the great prince, guardian of your people; it shall be a time unsurpassed in distress since nations began until that time."
In today's Gospel, Jesus tells us, "In those days after that tribulation the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken." Then, just in case there are some in the audience who think He is just blowing smoke, Jesus adds, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away."
The fact that the sun will cease shining someday is more certain than that it will rise tomorrow morning. The fact that each of us will meet our Maker is more certain than is our next paycheck or even our next meal.
