Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Archbishop Raymond L. Burke, prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, to the Congregation for Bishops, the Vatican office that oversees the nomination of bishops and the creation and governance of dioceses.

Archbishop Burke, the archbishop emeritus of St. Louis and a canon lawyer, is also a member of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts and the Congregation for the Clergy.

Archbishop Burke’s predecessor as St. Louis archbishop, Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia, is a member of the Congregation for Bishops.

Born in Richland Center, Wis., Archbishop Burke received a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 1984. He served as Bishop of La Crosse, Wis., from 1995-2003. He was appointed the ninth bishop/eighth archbishop of the Archdiocese of St. Louis in December 2003.
