More than 80 friars of the Franciscan Province of the Sacred Heart gathered at the Frontenac Hilton on Oct. 5-7 for a provincial chapter and its 150th anniversary celebration. The friars met to begin a process to forge a new vision for the province.

“The transformative visioning that the friars are pursuing will eventually change the way they see themselves, the way they interact with each other, and the way they carry out their ministry in the Church and in society,” said Franciscan Father Benet Fonck of the province’s Office of Communications.

The impetus for this “transformative visioning” is the passion for the Franciscan charism and mission, the reduced number of friars and the problematic financial situation, and the situation of the Church and of society, according to the Franciscans.

On Oct. 5, Provincial Vicar Franciscan Friar Michael Jennrich, the provincial vicar, read a letter from former provincial minister and current General Vicar Friar Michael Perry, OFM, stressing that the purpose of the gathering was to facilitate the process of visioning “so as to claim it as our own.”
