What to do? Fund children's school tuition

ALLOUEZ, Wis. (CNS) — Where some see obstacles, Richard Ogan sees opportunities to solve problems.

He saw empty desks and religious schools closing mainly because parents could not afford the tuition at schools in the Diocese of Green Bay. So he created All God’s Children, a fund that pays tuition for poor children at local Catholic or other religious schools.

He hopes one day to expand it regionally and then nationally.

Ogan, a member of Resurrection Parish in Allouez, started All God’s Children as a tribute to Kathleen Conway Ogan, his wife of 32 years, after she died two years ago. In its first year, the fund paid the tuition of seven children. That grew to 28 the next year and to at least 60 this year.

Money comes from contributions to the All God’s Children fund in the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation. Not creating a separate nonprofit corporation keeps costs low, Ogan said. Last year 97 percent of contributions went to pay tuition.
