Q: Will you please help me understand what is meant by the idea that Christ had to die for our sins?

Since death was not part of God’s plan for man and was introduced into our existence through our sins, it may be incongruous for God to use death as the means of salvation for His creation. Yet, that is precisely what was accomplished when our Lord suffered and died on the cross for our sins.

In order to understand the necessity and value of our Lord’s passion we must keep in mind the depth of God’s love for us and His willingness to manifest that love through the free, deliberate actions of His Son. So too, Christ willingly accepts His cross, the weight of all sins, because He likewise desires to show forth His love for us. The Gospel of Saint John explains that “…God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life” (John 3:16). Love and the desire that we achieve eternal beatitude are the reasons for our Lord’s dying for our sins.
