There was a family reunion in Washington late last month, one that numbers in the hundreds.

The “family” was St. Francis Borgia Regional High School, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Borgia football at its opening game against St. Clair on Friday night, Aug. 28.

The stadium was filled with current and former students, along with friends, family members, supporters of the Catholic archdiocesan high school.

About 15 members of the original Borgia Knights football team were in attendance, along with members of the cheerleaders’ squad. Alumni from other graduating classes and other years’ football teams were on hand, recalling games long past and enjoying a spirited game that evening.

“It was a great turnout,” said Dale Gildehaus, the head football coach at Borgia and one of the planners of the celebration. “Borgia really is a family.”
