Knights of Peter Claver observe 100th birthday
The Knights of Peter Claver Inc., the nation’s oldest and largest African-American lay Catholic organization, celebrated the feast of St. Peter Claver and the 100th anniversary of the order with a Sept. 13 Mass at St. Matthew the Apostle Church in North St. Louis.
Members throughout the western hemisphere celebrated. Locally members of six councils and courts were on hand at St. Matthew, joined by the Knights of Columbus’ Honor Guard.
St. Peter Claver is known for his service and compassion to African slaves as they arrived in South America and waited to be sold.
The order of the Knights of Peter Claver was founded on Nov. 7, 1909, in Mobile, Ala., as a counter to the large number of black men leaving the Catholic Church. St. Peter Claver was declared the patron saint of Black Catholic Missions in 1896.
