Apocryphal gospels did not meet standard of early Church

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly versionSend to friendSend to friend Q: From time to time I see advertisements in different publications to purchase the “Gospel of Thomas,” and I wonder why it is not included with the four Gospels in the Bible? Are the four Gospels in the Bible — Matthew, Mark, Luke and John — the only ancient books that claim to be veritable records of Christ’s life? This “Gospel of Thomas” you mention is part of a body of early extra-canonical Christian writings that, generally speaking, claim to conserve memories of Jesus and the apostles and copy the major literary types of New Testament literature.
