Missions collection brings faith to Latin America
Maria Reina Parish in La Paz, Bolivia is a vibrant parish that brings the sacraments to the people, reaches out to children and youth and touches countless lives through programs for the poor and destitute.
The parish is staffed by St. Louis priests and supported through an annual collection in parishes of the St. Louis Archdiocese to be held next weekend, Aug. 1 and 2.
In a recent interview with the Review, Father Patrick Hayden, pastor of Maria Reina, said the collection is of “extreme importance for the continuation of the apostolate. It’s more needed than ever.”
Father Hayden, who has spent more than 15 years in Bolivia, brimmed with enthusiasm when talking about the ministries of the parish and the response of the people. He said the work of the Church of St. Louis with the people of La Paz is “a sign of our commitment and of hope in this time of upheaval and time of missionary outreach.”
The St. Louis priest noted that relations between the U.S. and Bolivian governments are strained, but that the St. Louis connection “is a sign that the Church in the United States is with them.”
