A pilgrimage to Rome is in itself a holy experience. A chance to meet the Pope brings even more meaning to the trip.

Two people from St. Louis had that opportunity during a special papal audience June 30.

Peggy Forrest, general chairperson for the 2009 Annual Catholic Appeal, and Robert Belken, an 11-year-old parishioner at St. Michael in Fredericktown, Mo., were chosen by Archbishop Carlson to meet Pope Benedict XVI.

After the Holy Father addressed the audience and offered a blessing, each of the 34 archbishops who received a pallium the day before introduced the pope to guests.

One by one, the pope greeted the pilgrims.

“It was surprising in that he was so intent on each individual person that he met,” Forrest said. “Just the look that he gave me when he looked me directly in the eye said more than just the few words that he said. It’s probably a moment that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
