Archbishop Robert Carlson will travel to Rome to receive his pallium June 29. The St. Louis Review will travel with the archbishop and pilgrims to cover the event and tours of Rome.

The pallium is a circular stole worn by an archbishop as a symbol of his first priority: a shepherd of the faithful. The pallium is made from the wool of lambs raised at the convent of St. Agnes in Rome. Lambs chosen for the quality of their wool are then blessed by the pope on the feast of St. Agnes on January 21. They are then sent to the Benedictine Sisters of St. Cecilia in Travsterve, where they are cared for and shorn of their wool.

An archbishop wears the pallium when he celebrates the Eucharist.
