Pope Benedict appoints Bp. Lucas to head Archdiocese of Omaha

Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Bishop George J. Lucas as archbishop of Omaha, Neb.

Archbishop-elect Lucas, a native St. Louisan, is currently head of the Diocese of Springfield, Ill. He is 59.

The announcement was made June 3 in Washington, D.C., by Archbishop Pietro Sambi, apostolic nuncio to the United States.  Archbishop-elect Lucas succeeds Archbishop Elden F. Curtiss, 76, who recently submitted his resignation to the pope.

Born in St. Louis in 1949, Archbishop-elect Lucas completed his theological studies at Kenrick Seminary and earned a master’s degree in history from St. Louis University. He was ordained a priest on May 24, 1975.

From 1981-1990, he also taught in St. Louis’ high school seminary program.
