Mass to remember those with breast cancer
After Kathy Schlesinger was diagnosed with breast cancer a decade and a half ago, her family and friends rallied around her by participating in the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
Several years ago, though, Schlesinger, a member of Ascension Parish in Chesterfield, said she learned through her sister that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure national organization allows its affiliates to designate financial support to abortion-providing facilities.
Schlesinger, whose breast cancer returned in 2005, said she couldn’t believe what her sister told her at first.
“We always took part in the Komen walks,” she said. “It was a day of hope, a very good day. I guess a lot of it was wishful thinking on my part.”
Several years ago when the archdiocese released a position statement on the annual race, Schlesinger knew she couldn’t participate any longer.
