Scenic beaches, great lighthouses and history that reaches back to Jamestown and Roanoke

Seeking an adventure-filled vacation along with some time for rest and relaxation? Then head east to Virginia.

As home to the first permanent English settlement in the New World, Virginia no doubt is a destination for those who want to learn more about our nation’s history.

But as I learned during a trip there last winter, Virginia also is home to a beautiful coastline filled with sandy beaches, places where a weary traveler can find reprieve.

The visit started in Virginia Beach, which is less than a half-hour drive from Norfolk International Airport. Upon arrival, it was time to hit the beach.

Among the 35 miles of beachfront property along the Virginia Beach coast is the resort district, where a 3-mile boardwalk stretches along a line of hotels, restaurants and shops.
