50 state parks provide lots of choices for vacation planning around Missouri

Missourians are blessed with plenty of choices for outdoor activities. The Show Me State has 50 state parks that offer a wide variety of activities and settings all around the state. Thirteen state parks have various kinds of lodging facilities, and many offer camping sites. A sampling of state parks includes:

Thousand Hills State Park in Kirksville has American Indian rock carvings that date back more than 1,500 years. And while you’re there, enjoy the 573-acre Forrest Lake, which includes a beach, marina and campsites.

Trail of Tears State Park, in Jackson near Cape Girardeau, is a memorial to the thousands of Cherokee Indians who passed through here in the 1830s in their forced relocation to Oklahoma. The  visitors center has exhibits about the tragic relocation along the “Trail of Tears.” The 3,400-acre park includes bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, a stocked fishing lake and camping and hiking opportunities.
