Parishioners’ food pantry ministry is a treasure
Nearly 20 years ago, Marge and Nick Voigt decided to open their home to their parish — literally.
Back then, Marge Voigt had become involved in a new service ministry at the Voigts’ parish, St. Joseph in Manchester.
“They started doing a lot of services for parishioners,” including meals for the sick and parish representatives at funeral Masses, said the 70 year old.
“Another person and I suggested a food pantry, but our parish had no place to store the food. We called it the Sharing Pantry — it was something for people who had, who could share with people who didn’t have.”
The pantry started out as one small shelf in the Voigts’ home. Food was donated by parishioners, most of it canned goods.
