The Catholic Charities Christmas Appeal has surpassed its $1.8 million goal.

Catholic Charities Archdiocese of St. Louis kicked off the campaign in late November.

Msgr. Mark Ullrich, president of Catholic Charities, noted that the success of the annual appeal comes despite the downturn in the economy.

"It is only normal for people to view these tough economic times as the worst of times to reach a goal," he said. "People stepped up knowing that we needed their help more than ever, and we thank them for that."

Ron Henderson, Catholic Charities board president, agreed. "In spite of the tough economic times, I was pleasantly surprised at how people in the community came together once again and allowed us to continue to provide for those who definitely need our services. All of us at Catholic Charities are very grateful."
