Find peaceful, spiritual retreat at San Damiano

San Damiano Retreat Center and Shrine of the Good Shepherd, in scenic Southern Illinois, is less than a three-hour drive from St. Louis. It has spectacular scenery in a spiritual setting that offers the opportunity for both a retreat and a vacation.

The center is less than a three-hour drive from St. Louis, 26 miles south of Harrisburg, Ill., and 10 miles east of Golconda, Ill.

Begun in 1991, San Damiano is operated by Catholic Shrine Pilgrimage of Belleville, Ill. San Damiano’s campus includes more than 180 acres within the Shawnee National Forest. The complex, on a bluff 200 feet above the Ohio River, includes a chapel, more than 30 guest rooms and several prayer gardens.

Its conference center includes a meeting room that can accommodate 200-300 people, a chapel that seats 45, a religious book and video library and a religious art collection of mosaics and tapestries. Other features include the Garden of the Angels and outdoor Stations of the Cross.
